g1t.sh

Commit

The desktop app runs a self-hosted runner for the signed-in person, a few seconds after its window opens, and stops it when g1t quits. It is on unless turned off in settings, runs sandboxed by default, and never falls back to anything that is not a sandbox: on Linux with Sysbox it is the runner's image under sysbox-runc, with no Docker socket; elsewhere it says a sandbox isn't available on this computer yet and runs nothing, until g1t-runner's sandbox launcher is released, which one small module (runner/launcher.rs) will call. Running jobs in Docker, or directly on this computer, are choices a person makes, each said plainly for what it can reach.

Registering needs nothing typed: the app asks the site's page for a registration token for the workspace, hands it to g1t-runner in its environment once, and keeps the registration for every later start. g1t-runner itself is downloaded from the server's releases and checked against the release's SHA-256, and the app keeps it up to date, and the runner's image, while the runner is idle and never in the middle of a job. What the runner is doing is in the tray, as a row that opens settings with Start or Stop under it, and each state carries why it is so and how to fix it, from one catalogue (runner/diagnosis.rs): Docker isn't running, a sandbox isn't available here yet, signed out, not an owner of the workspace, offline, an update that failed, a runner that stopped with its exit code, each with a one-click fix. The runner's log is kept in the app's data folder.

1+//! The Sandboxed backend on Linux today: the runner's image under Sysbox,
2+//! through this computer's Docker, exactly as docs.g1t.sh/guides/
3+//! self-hosted-runners/#run-it-as-a-container runs it. Sysbox gives the
4+//! runner's container a user namespace of its own and a Docker Engine
5+//! inside it, so each job is a container inside the runner's container and
6+//! neither reaches this computer (`nested-container` isolation). The
7+//! machine's Docker socket is never given to it.
8+//!
9+//! The registration and credential are kept on a volume of their own, so
10+//! the container can be replaced, when a newer image is out, without
11+//! registering again. Keeping it up to date is pulling the image and,

1+//! What the runner is doing, and when it is not running or is failing, why
2+//! and how to fix it: the one catalogue of those words. The tray shows a
3+//! diagnosis's title, the settings window all of it with its buttons, and
4+//! the site shows it as the app sends it, word for word, on its Runners
5+//! page (and keeps it, so a person's other computers are listed with
6+//! theirs). The site adds nothing of its own: what it says of a computer
7+//! whose g1t is closed is `closed` here, sent with every report.
8+//!
9+//! Each action is an id the settings window and the site turn into a
10+//! button; bridge.rs and settings.js do what it says.
