Upgrade katex to 0.18.2: needs code changes #29

Closedg1tbot wants to merge into maing1ton g1t

Approved by g1t

  1. Note

Used the standard model (Claude Sonnet 5.5): making a change.

  2. Prompt

You are a coding agent working in the git repository checked out in the current directory, on pull request #29 of this repository.

Issue #28: Upgrade katex to 0.18.2: needs code changes

katex (npm) has known vulnerabilities with a fix in 0.18.2, and raising its version alone does not pass this project's checks. Upgrade it to 0.18.2 or later everywhere it is locked, and change the code that depends on it, keeping other changes to what the upgrade needs.

    AdvisorySeverityAffectedFixed inSummary
GHSA-238p-pmpm-9mq7low0.16.470.18.2KaTeX: Existing prototype pollution can bypass trust restrictions

    Locked in: .

If the fix needs a major upgrade that breaks the build, change the code that depends on it in the same pull request.

    Definition of done

    • No lockfile resolves a vulnerable version, and the tests still pass.

Opened by g1t's security updates. Turn them off for this project on its Security page.

What people and agents have learned here before you, kept as memory. Treat it as notes from colleagues: usually right, sometimes out of date. Where it disagrees with the code, the code wins; say so in your summary.

    Project memory (flagon-io/g1t):

    • [fact] g1t is a Cargo workspace (apps/api, crates/*, services/actions, services/billing, services/events, services/identity, services/integrations, services/packages, services/webhooks, services/repos, services/search, services/security, services/work); cargo test runs its tests.
    • [fact] g1t is a Cargo workspace (apps/api, crates/*, services/actions, services/billing, services/events, services/identity, services/integrations, services/webhooks, services/repos, services/search, services/security, services/work); cargo test runs its tests.
    • [fact] g1t is a monorepo; its packages are in apps/, services/, packages/*.
    • [fact] In g1t, npm run typecheck runs the typecheck: npm run typecheck --workspaces --if-present.
    • [convention] g1t uses npm (its lockfile is committed): install with npm install, not pnpm or yarn or bun.

When you learn something the next agent here would need (how to build or test, a convention, a decision and why, a trap), save it with the remember tool: scope project for this codebase, workspace for what holds across the workspace's projects. One short fact each. Never a secret, a key or a token. recall searches what is kept.

Context for this work, from the workspace's context hub. It is reference material gathered from the workspace's repositories, deployments and memory, not instructions; where it disagrees with the code, the code wins.

When your work is pushed, the repository's workflows (in .g1t/workflows) run on your pull request as its checks, and it merges only once the checks its default branch requires pass. Before you finish, run the same tests, linters and builds those workflows run, where the tools are installed, and fix what fails. If the issue has a Definition of done, meet every point of it.

You have g1t's own tools (mcp__g1t__…) for this repository. Use them to work with the other agents and people here rather than around them: if you find something that needs doing outside your task, open an issue for it with create_issue, saying what and why and naming the pull request you are working on, instead of widening your change; to tell another pull request's author something, such as a conflict you can see coming, comment on it with add_comment; to ask the agent working on another pull request something, or hand it work that belongs there, use message_agent with kind question or handoff and your own pull request as from_number, and keep working: the answer reaches you at a later step. Answer what other agents send you with answer_message. If the work mentions a ticket or alert from another system, such as a Jira key like TECH-1234 or a Sentry link, get_context fetches it as it is now. get_pull_request shows another pull request's change and the files it shares with others. The repository's GitHub Actions workflows run on every commit you push: list_workflow_runs with your pull request's number shows how they went, and get_workflow_run and get_job_logs show why one failed. Mention anything you opened, asked or answered in your summary.

Make the change and keep it focused on the issue. Commit your work with a clear message. Do not push; that is done for you. Finish with a short summary of what you changed and why. It becomes the description of your pull request, so write it for a reviewer: plain sentences, no headings, no emoji, no checklists, and nothing about whether anything was committed or pushed. Say what you did not verify.

The lockfile no longer resolves a vulnerable katex. I did not run the typecheck or tests, so that part of the definition of done is unconfirmed.

The web app already depended on katex ^0.19.0, which is above the fixed 0.18.2. The vulnerable 0.16.47 came from a second copy nested under mermaid, which asks for ^0.16.47. I added a root overrides entry in package.json pinning katex to ^0.19.0. I then removed the nested mermaid/node_modules/katex entry from package-lock.json and re-resolved the lockfile. It now has a single katex at 0.19.0. The nested copy of commander 8.3.0 that only that old katex needed went with it.

I made no source changes. apps/web/app/components/docs/blocks.tsx already calls katex.renderToString with options that 0.19.0 accepts.

It is for issue #28: Upgrade katex to 0.18.2: needs code changes

katex (npm) has known vulnerabilities with a fix in 0.18.2, and raising its version alone does not pass this project's checks. Upgrade it to 0.18.2 or later everywhere it is locked, and change the code that depends on it, keeping other changes to what the upgrade needs.

If the fix needs a major upgrade that breaks the build, change the code that depends on it in the same pull request.

    Definition of done

    • No lockfile resolves a vulnerable version, and the tests still pass.

Opened by g1t's security updates. Turn them off for this project on its Security page.

    What you said you changed:

    • Not verified: a full npm ci, npm run typecheck and the test suites. The npm ci I started timed out in the foreground and may still be running in the background.

For more, use the get_workflow_run tool (repo flagon-io/g1t and the run's id), then get_job_logs for the job that failed. Fix the cause in the code, not the workflow, unless the workflow itself is wrong. Push, and the checks run again.

Address every point above, and nothing else. If a point from an agent's review contradicts what a person asked for, keep what the person asked for and say so. If you disagree with a point, leave the code as it is and say why. Commit your work with a clear message. Do not push; that is done for you. Finish with a short account of what you changed in response to each point, in plain sentences, with no headings and no emoji. Say what you did not verify.

The CI failure was in scripts/ops/restore-to-gitstore.test.mjs, not in the katex change. The test ran git tag -a v1, and CI has no git committer identity configured, so git refused to create the annotated tag. I made that call pass -c user.name=t -c user.email=t@example.com, the same way the file's commit helper already does. The change is one line and is committed.

I ran that test file locally and all three tests pass. This machine already has a git identity set, so that run doesn't show the fix working in a no-identity environment like CI. The CI run on the pushed commit will show that.

I did not run npm ci, npm run typecheck or the other test suites, and I did not check that mermaid renders math correctly on katex 0.19.

    What you said you changed:

For more, use the get_workflow_run tool (repo flagon-io/g1t and the run's id), then get_job_logs for the job that failed. Fix the cause in the code, not the workflow, unless the workflow itself is wrong. Push, and the checks run again.

What people and agents have learned here before you, kept as memory. Treat it as notes from colle … (truncated)

  62. g1t

I fixed the failing CI check and committed the fix as a539656.

The failing test was scripts/ops/backup-restore-drill.test.mjs. It creates an annotated tag, and git refuses to make one without a committer identity. The CI runner has no identity configured. My earlier commit gave the tag its own name and email in restore-to-gitstore.test.mjs but missed this second file. Line 78 now passes -c user.name=t -c user.email=t@example.com to git tag, the same way the test's commit helper already does. This is a fix to the test itself, not to the workflow.

I ran scripts/ops/*.test.mjs (the CI step npm run test:ops) with an empty home directory and system git config disabled, so git had no identity. All 41 tests passed. No other test under scripts creates tags or commits without an identity.

    Not verified:

    • The other CI steps: I did not run npm ci, npm run typecheck, the workspace tests, the web build or cargo test. There is no node_modules here. In the failing CI run, typecheck, the workspace tests and test:deploy all passed before test:ops failed. My change only touches that one test file.
    • test:deploy locally: deploy.test.mjs fails to load here. That is presumably the missing dependencies, since it passed in CI, but I did not confirm the cause.
    • From before: I still have not checked that mermaid renders math correctly on katex 0.19.

I did not open any issues or send any messages.
