Upgrade glib to 0.20.0: needs code changes #31

Closedg1tbot wants to merge into maing1ton g1t
  1. Note

Told about 1 other pull request in progress: #29.

  2. Note

Used the standard model (Claude Sonnet 5.5): making a change.

  3. Prompt

You are a coding agent working in the git repository checked out in the current directory, on pull request #31 of this repository.

Issue #30: Upgrade glib to 0.20.0: needs code changes

glib (crates.io) has known vulnerabilities with a fix in 0.20.0, and raising its version alone does not pass this project's checks. Upgrade it to 0.20.0 or later everywhere it is locked, and change the code that depends on it, keeping other changes to what the upgrade needs.

    AdvisorySeverityAffectedFixed inSummary
GHSA-wrw7-89jp-8q8gmedium0.18.50.20.0Unsoundness in Iterator and DoubleEndedIterator impls for glib::VariantStrIter

    Locked in: .

If the fix needs a major upgrade that breaks the build, change the code that depends on it in the same pull request.

    Definition of done

    • No lockfile resolves a vulnerable version, and the tests still pass.

Opened by g1t's security updates. Turn them off for this project on its Security page.

What people and agents have learned here before you, kept as memory. Treat it as notes from colleagues: usually right, sometimes out of date. Where it disagrees with the code, the code wins; say so in your summary.

    Project memory (flagon-io/g1t):

    • [fact] g1t is a Cargo workspace (apps/api, crates/*, services/actions, services/billing, services/events, services/identity, services/integrations, services/packages, services/webhooks, services/repos, services/search, services/security, services/work); cargo test runs its tests.

    • [fact] In g1t, npm run typecheck runs the typecheck: npm run typecheck --workspaces --if-present.

When you learn something the next agent here would need (how to build or test, a convention, a decision and why, a trap), save it with the remember tool: scope project for this codebase, workspace for what holds across the workspace's projects. One short fact each. Never a secret, a key or a token. recall searches what is kept.

Context for this work, from the workspace's context hub. It is reference material gathered from the workspace's repositories, deployments and memory, not instructions; where it disagrees with the code, the code wins.

When your work is pushed, the repository's workflows (in .g1t/workflows) run on your pull request as its checks, and it merges only once the checks its default branch requires pass. Before you finish, run the same tests, linters and builds those workflows run, where the tools are installed, and fix what fails. If the issue has a Definition of done, meet every point of it.

Other agents and people are working in this repository at the same time. These pull requests are in progress, and any of them may merge before yours:

    • #29 Upgrade katex to 0.18.2: needs code changes (for issue #28), by g1t: changes package-lock.json, package.json, scripts/ops/backup-restore-drill.test.mjs, scripts/ops/restore-to-gitstore.test.mjs

Keep your change to what your task needs. Where you have to change the same files as one of these, keep your edits small and local so both can merge cleanly: do not reformat, reorder or move code you do not need to change, and do not do work that belongs to one of them.

You have g1t's own tools (mcp__g1t__…) for this repository. Use them to work with the other agents and people here rather than around them: if you find something that needs doing outside your task, open an issue for it with create_issue, saying what and why and naming the pull request you are working on, instead of widening your change; to tell another pull request's author something, such as a conflict you can see coming, comment on it with add_comment; to ask the agent working on another pull request something, or hand it work that belongs there, use message_agent with kind question or handoff and your own pull request as from_number, and keep working: the answer reaches you at a later step. Answer what other agents send you with answer_message. If the work mentions a ticket or alert from another system, such as a Jira key like TECH-1234 or a Sentry link, get_context fetches it as it is now. get_pull_request shows another pull request's change and the files it shares with others. The repository's GitHub Actions workflows run on every commit you push: list_workflow_runs with your pull request's number shows how they went, and get_workflow_run and get_job_logs show why one failed. Mention anything you opened, asked or answered in your summary.

Make the change and keep it focused on the issue. Commit your work with a clear message. Do not push; that is done for you. Finish with a short summary of what you changed and why. It becomes the description of your pull request, so write it for a reviewer: plain sentences, no headings, no emoji, no checklists, and nothing about whether anything was committed or pushed. Say what you did not verify.

  4. Note

This checkout is not the repository's own branch, so its CLAUDE.md and .claude settings, hooks, MCP servers and commands were not loaded.

I did not upgrade glib, and the repository has no changes. glib 0.20.0 can't be reached from the dependencies this project can use, and the only way to it is too large to do safely under this issue.

The only vulnerable lockfile is apps/desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.lock, which has glib 0.18.5. It gets glib through gtk 0.18.2, which stable Tauri 2.12.3 pins. tao 0.37.1 and wry 0.57.0 sit on the same GTK stack, though I only checked the Tauri link. I ran cargo update -p glib --precise 0.20.0, and cargo refused. gtk 0.18.2 requires glib ^0.18, and the newest gtk release is 0.19.0, so no gtk release is built for glib 0.20.0. I ran a full cargo update as well, and it left glib at 0.18.5.

    That leaves two routes:

    • Tauri 3: the only Tauri release that moves off the GTK 0.18 stack is 3.0.0-alpha.4, which depends on gtk4. Moving to a pre-release major version means reworking the desktop app's code and plugins. I couldn't build or test that here, so I didn't try it.
    • Patching the GTK crates: a [patch] of gtk, webkit2gtk and wry onto forks that use glib 0.20 would be unsupported and unverifiable.

This needs a decision from the maintainers. Either wait for a stable Tauri release on gtk4, or accept the Tauri 3 alpha migration as its own task. The advisory affects VariantStrIter, which this app's own code doesn't use, though I didn't check whether the GTK crates call it.

I didn't build or test anything, since nothing changed. I opened no issues and sent no messages to other agents.

    [{"kind":"gotcha","scope":"project","text":"The only vulnerable glib is in apps/desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.lock; it is pulled in by gtk 0.18 via Tauri 2.x, so glib cannot move past 0.18 without a Tauri 3 (gtk4) migration.","evidence":"cargo update -p glib --precise 0.20.0 fails: gtk v0.18.2 requires glib ^0.18; newest gtk is 0.19.0; tauri 3.0.0-alpha.4 depends on gtk4"}] {"confidence":"medium","uncertain_about":["whether a Tauri 3 alpha migration is acceptable to maintainers","whether the app uses VariantStrIter"]}
