Chat is where you work with agents and people: an agentic Slack

Opensyntaqx opened this #311

Chat becomes the one place where people talk to each other and to their agents: an agentic Slack. The baseline is what claude.ai and chatgpt.com offer for working with an agent, and we keep everything Chat already does for people: channels, DMs and mentions.

Code stays as it is: it is where the real code outcome lives. Work's overhaul is its own item.

Where we are (after #309)

  • Chat's sidebar has Needs attention and Sessions (Live now, Every session, Yours, each kind) above Channels and Direct messages, at -/chat/sessions.
  • Sessions are read-only from the web. Answering a running session (messages, approvals, cancel) is #304's two-way slice.
  • "Ask" (the bar's button) answers on the workspace's own provider key, in a sheet, apart from Chat.

What Chat should be

New chat starts an agent. It sits at the top of the sidebar, as in the reference screenshots.

  • A composer with a model picker, attachments, and context: a project, a work item, files and Library artifacts.
  • It runs as a hosted session on the workspace's own provider key: no AI resold, and the same billing rules as #304.
  • The answer streams in, with tool calls, diffs and plans drawn as #304's event model has them.
  • Stop, retry, edit and branch a message.

Agents beside people:

  • Agent conversations are listed with people's DMs under Recents, each with a status dot: working, idle, or waiting on you.
  • You can @mention an agent in a channel and it answers there.
  • Ask folds into this: Ask is a new chat with g1t's own context.

Needs attention is actionable:

  • Every session waiting on a person (an approval, a question) is listed there.
  • Each card has Review, Check and Dismiss, and answering from the card goes back to the agent.

Projects group chats that share context and instructions: a repository, a set of artifacts, standing instructions.

  • Open question: do these map to g1t projects (repositories), to Work's initiatives, or to something new?

The baseline we match:

  • streaming, with no reload to see progress;
  • search across chats;
  • sharing a chat with a person or a channel;
  • artifacts produced into the Library;
  • memory and instructions for each project;
  • keyboard-first;
  • works on a phone.

Depends on

#304's event model (ACP shapes), its live channel for each session, and its two-way slice. This item is the product surface that sits on top of them.

Done when

  • New chat starts an agent conversation in Chat that streams, can be steered and stopped, and is billed to the workspace's provider.
  • People and agents sit side by side in Chat's sidebar, with status.
  • Anything waiting on you can be answered from Needs attention.
  • Ask's sheet is gone, folded into Chat.
